Rancho Bernardo (CA) Softball 2007

Here are a pair of "hybrid" mosaics of the Rancho Bernardo Girls' 10-&-Under All-Stars, who advanced to the California state championship tournament in 2007. The team parents took over 800 photos along the way, from which we created 1600 tiles and two designs -- one with a predominately blue background from the girls' jerseys; one with a more neutral beige background. Both mosaics consist of all-unique tiles.

Aspect ratios in mosaics

The RBS mosaics are an excellent illustration of the role that aspect ratios play in creating an appealing final design. Note that the team's "RB" logo is roughly square. Had the girls sat in a more "landscape" orientation in their team photo (such as in the Clearview Field Hockey mosaic), then fitting in the logo would have been a considerable challenge. But because the team photo was also close to square, we were able to feature a large logo prominently in the upper left, and we even had room for a softball underneath that provided a home for many green and yellow tiles. So if you're considering a team "hybrid" mosaic, try to take at least two good snapshots of the players - one landscape and one portrait. That will leave the most options open when it comes time to creating the final design!
